By Sarah Shurge – For the first time this year, Wayne Memorial High School has a girls Flag Football team
“It’s so exciting because that’s one of the fastest growing sports right now,” said Mark Woodson, Wayne Memorial athletic director.
The team is sponsored by the Detroit Lions.
“It’s huge for them [Detroit Lions] to care about our youth – the youth is our future – and get our kids more excited and involved in athletics again,” said Woodson.
Over 50 girls tried out for the Flag Football team.
“The girls just love it. They’re really excited and working hard,” said Woodson.
The season started in spring and the team is currently 3-0.
“For this being our first year, it’s been amazing. Most of the teams we’re playing are in their second year,” said Woodson.
Wayne hosted a home game on Friday, May 1st, versus John Glenn and won for the second time.
“If they keep winning, we will know in a couple of weeks if they make playoffs,” said Woodson.
