August 4th primary election information
By Sarah Shurge – The primary elections are coming! Tuesday, August 4th, voters will vote for governor, congress, the state legislature, and more.

The League of Women Voters of Northwest Wayne County’s is hosting a public candidate forum for those running in the August primary for the Wayne City Council. The forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9th, at the Wayne District Library.
All candidates certified to appear on the ballot are invited to attend the forum. Other candidates may be invited, provided they have complied with the requirements of the local municipality or county to be a write-in candidate prior to the forum.
The format for the event will be as follows: Candidates will be allowed a one minute opening statement, a one minute response to a question, and a one minute summation.
The forum will be recorded and available to the public at my.lwv.org/michigan/northwest-wayne-county shortly after the forum is completed.
Let’s meet the candidates in the partisan section (vote only one-party section):
Governor candidates are: Christopher Robert Swanson (Dem.), Jocelyn Benson (Dem.), Aric Nesbitt (Rep.), Mike Cox (Rep.), John James (Rep.) and Perry Johnson (Rep.)
United States Senator candidates are: Haley Stevens (Dem.), Abdul El-Sayed (Dem.), and Mike Rogers (Rep.)
Representative in Congress 13th District candidates are: Donavan McKinney (Dem.), Shri Thanedar (Dem.), T.P. Nykoriak (Rep.), and write-in candidate John Goci.
State Senator 4th District candidates are: Darrin Camilleri (Dem.) and Marcie Grzywacz (Rep.)
Representative in State Legislature 25th District candidates are: Peter Herzberg (Dem.) and Dawn Udell (Rep.)
County Executive candidates are: Warren C. Evans (Dem.), Sigmunt John Szczepkowski, Jr (Dem.), and Michael A. Evans (Rep.)
Delegate to County Convention candidates are: Mark Brian Blackwell (Dem.) and Cynthia Graham (Rep.)
Let’s meet the candidates in the nonpartisan section:
City Council candidates (vote for not more than three) are: Alfred Brock, Kathy Lawrence, Brett Macek, DeVincent A. McFarlin, Mathew P. Mulholland, Donald L. Quarles, and Shannon Rochon.
The ballot also has three proposals that you can vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on.
The first proposal is regarding Wayne County Transit Authority Wayne County Public Transportation Millage.
The second proposal is regarding City of Wayne Library Millage Renewal Proposal.
And the third is regarding Wayne-Westland Community Schools Replacement Building and Site Sinking Fund Millage Proposal.
To fully read each proposal, visit mvic.sos.state.mi.us/PublicBallot/Index. For the ‘Election’ field, select: State Primary – August 4, 2026. For the ‘County’ field, select: Wayne County. For the ‘Jurisdiction’ field, select: Wayne City. And for the ‘Precinct’ field, select: Precinct 1. Then select ‘view the ballot’ and you’ll be able to read each proposal on a sample ballot.
If you are registered to vote, you must vote at your assigned polling place at Hype Recreation Center. Polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
