Family fun for all ages at Roberson’s Fun Center

Welcome back to another Spotlight Series with Sarah!
The series where the writer gets to know the city more personally, while the readers get to know the writer better in the process.
After a week where life seemed to be kicking both mine and my neighbor, Autumn’s, butts, I asked if she and her kids, Theron II and Mya, would like to try out and experience a new place with me to blow off some steam.
They all said yes and were excited to try something new together.
On Saturday, August 2nd, the four of us visited Roberson’s Fun Center for the first time.
Not sure what to expect, we walked in and saw a wall of TVs and gaming chairs on the left side. The rest of the space was filled with arcade games, pool tables, foosball, air hockey, and even corn hole.
There were tables and chairs by the windows to sit down and eat at, along with a giant couch near a mounted TV on the back wall, and a stage for karaoke.
In the back corner was a kid’s area with a seesaw, rocking horse, trampoline, basketball hoop, piano play mat, giant connect four, toys, books, and more.
Immediately, we could tell there was something for everyone and this was a great space for parties or events.

Cynthia Roberson, Roberson’s Fun Center owner, was sitting at the register by the door and gave us a quick tour and pointed out all the fun center’s features.
We paid a small admission fee for one hour of gaming/billiards.
Roberson explained she didn’t like the idea of tokens, so none of her arcade games require tokens. The admission fee was all we paid for the entire visit, which was really nice.
We started off our visit with a game of foosball, then Mya played Pac-Man on an arcade table. The kids switched to playing Out Run and Pac-Man on arcade machines, while Autumn and I played pool.
Out Run is a racing game and Mya – who is turning 5 this month – was surprisingly good at her first time playing it.
When it comes to playing pool, Autumn and I on the other hand, just enjoyed ourselves and were happy when we actually landed a shot.
Theron ended up sitting at one of the gaming chairs to play Minecraft for a while.
We ended our visit with a few games of air hockey and corn hole before saying goodbye to Roberson and heading out.
While we were still in the parking lot, Theron told Autumn that he already wanted to go back.
We all agreed it was a great time and I’d highly recommend it to anyone with kids, for a party, or even for a cheap date night idea.
Roberson’s Fun Center has been open in Wayne for one year at its current location, four years at its previous location in Wayne.
Roberson’s Fun Center has over 10 consoles for gamers: Xbox 1-3, PlayStation 1-5, and Switch; with games such as: Apex Legends, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Madden NFL, NBA 2K21 and 2K20, Roblox, Fall Guys, Mortal Kombat, and much more.
There are old school games, four pool tables, two foosball tables, air hockey, electronic darts, ping pong, corn hole, and karaoke.
“You won’t have to leave my place to go anywhere because I have everything here for you,” said Roberson.
Roberson put a lot of thought and effort into making her Fun Center unique. “I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to just copy what anyone else had,” said Roberson. “I went to different businesses to see what not to do, which is why I have no tokens.”

Roberson created Roberson’s Fun Center with one main focus: teens. “I’m concentrating on teens and young adults that have no place to go – that’s why they get in trouble. I’m trying to give them a safe place where we don’t sell liquor,” said Roberson. “I’ve been in a lot of foster homes, I know teens go through a lot. I’m trying to give them a place to go.”
Roberson was in many foster homes growing up. By the time she was in the 8th grade, she was 16 years old. She went to a Job Corps after that, which gave her room and board, and within a year, she received her GED.
Roberson claims she took over her life from there.
She now has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and an associates in Electronics. She has been married for 40 years and has a daughter and a son.
Her father-in-law was a pastor and made her a choir director years ago. “I didn’t know anything about it. I asked the Lord to give me skills to do something I’ve never done,” said Roberson. During her time as choir director, Roberson got very close with the teens. “There were 12 kids that wanted to stay at my home with me. That’s when I said that when I get some money, I’ll get a place just for teens,” said Roberson.
Some of Roberson’s Fun Center’s most popular features are karaoke and Grand Theft Auto.
Roberson’s Fun Center also has one escape room, based off the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. Having a faith-based escape room was very important to Roberson as she wanted to be a good influence/mother-figure for teens in the community.
During the summer, Roberson’s Fun Center will have food and drinks for purchase, including pops for 50 cents, hot dogs for $1.50, and a slice of pizza for $1.00.
“I was in foster homes growing up and I’d sign up for summer school just to eat. I know kids don’t always have things to eat,” said Roberson. “I’m hoping I can keep doing what I’m doing and give back to the teens.”
Roberson’s Fun Center is located at 2669 S Wayne Rd, Westland, and is open 1p.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday – Saturday.
