Chicken and Fish is carryout convenience
Welcome back to another Spotlight Series with Sarah!
The series where the writer gets to know the city more personally, while the readers get to know the writer better in the process.
Back in June I mentioned that my mom had surgery. Well, in mid-October my mom had another surgery.
Last month my mom went in for her second hip replacement surgery. It was an outpatient procedure at a clinic, so we were supposed to be able to bring her home the same day (like we did with her first hip replacement done back in June).
After her surgery while she was in recovery, she complained of chest pressure and difficulty breathing. At one point her oxygen dropped to the low 70s. An oxygen mask was put on her and eventually the decision was made to transfer her by EMS to a hospital for observation.
At the hospital, tests were done that revealed she has a blood clot in her right upper lung. She was admitted to the hospital and put on medicine to break down the blood clot within six months.
Because of the anesthesiologist at Synergy Spine & Orthopedic Surgery Center that made the decision to transfer my mom to a hospital and for the doctor in the ER at Henry Ford Warren

Hospital that advised on taking tests before allowing my mom to leave (even though she wanted to), my mom is alive today.
If you ever feel like something is wrong, speak up. Don’t wait. Blood clots often go unnoticed, and my mom probably would have died within three to five days if she had gone home from the clinic. She truly is lucky to be alive.
However, the fight isn’t over for my mom. Now that she is home, she not only has to manage her blood clot, but she also has to recover from surgery.
You might remember last time that I mentioned how aside from working full-time with two part-time jobs, I also was busy taking care of my mom as she recovered.
That remains true this time around too.
To make things easier for myself and my brother when it comes to taking care of our mom, getting carry-out for dinner is a wonderful solution to save time and energy.
A perk of writing for The Wayne Dispatch is that I usually know when places open in Wayne because I write about the ribbon cutting ceremonies. I remembered previously writing about Wayne Chicken N Fish’s ribbon cutting ceremony and my family loves both chicken and fish, so I figured let’s give it a try.
So on Monday, November 3rd, I called Wayne Chicken N Fish to place a pick-up order for dinner. I ordered one of the family combo options which included: 20 wing ding, 20 large shrimp, six piece fish, and large fries. For the fish option, I chose tilapia. I also added a side of okra and two ranch dressings. I was given the option to add lemon pepper seasoning to my order, and of course I agreed.
The employee on the phone told me that my order would be ready in 15 minutes. I was surprised with how quickly they’d be able to prepare everything.
My brother took over “mom duty” and I headed to Wayne Chicken N Fish to pick up our order.
The register was straight across from the door, but on both sides of the door were convenience store items on shelves, including canned goods, dressings, oils, seasonings, pastas, cereal, baking items, and more. There was a refrigerator stocked with drinks and another stocked with fresh fish. There was also a freezer display next to the register with frozen fish and fresh dessert items on the end.
As I’ve mentioned before, I have a sweet tooth, so I was very tempted to buy one of the desserts, but our order was already ready, so I decided to hurry home.
Aside from our food, we were also given pieces of bread, ketchup, tartar sauce, and cayenne pepper sauce for free. Everything we ordered was delicious and cooked to perfection. Everyone was glad I added lemon pepper seasoning too.
I like spicy foods and hot sauces, so I tried the cayenne pepper sauce on the fish, wing dings, shrimp, and even the fries, and it really enhanced the flavor on everything.
My mom’s favorite item was the shrimp followed by the tilapia in close second.
“It was moist and flakey on the inside and crispy on the outside. That’s very hard to do because tilapia is a thin fillet. They really know what they’re doing,” said my mom.
My brother’s favorite part was the lemon pepper seasoning, but when it came to the actual food items, the okra was his favorite, followed also by the tilapia in second place.
Everything tasted so good, I couldn’t pick a favorite item. Even though I ate too much, there still was lots of food left over, which was great because that means less meals I had to worry about preparing for my mom. I already plan on ordering from Wayne Chicken N Fish again soon.
