Wayne Memorial welcomes new principal this year

New principal at Wayne Memorial High School, Cory Gildersleeve

By Sarah Shurge – Every new school year brings a fresh start. New classes, new students, new opportunities. However, that is not the only thing new this upcoming year for Wayne Memorial.
The Wayne Westland Community Schools is pleased to announce Mr. Cory Gildersleeve as the new principal for Wayne Memorial High School.
”I’m so pumped and honored to be here. I’ve heard so many great things about Wayne Memorial and the Wayne Pride that is here,” said Gildersleeve. “People here have been so fantastic and with open arms, bringing me in and making me a part of this family.”
Gildersleeve has been in public education for 24 and a half years. He first served as a teacher and a coach in Ann Arbor, then served as the principal at Ypsilanti High School since 2016. He has experience in College and Career Readiness, Dual Enrollment, Early Middle College, Restorative Practices, and Upward Bound.
“I want to improve attendance, academics, and attitude. I want scholars earning the best possible high school career we can give them, and developing skill sets, so when they walk away from us and grab that diploma, they are ready for the next step in the journey,” said Gildersleeve.
Gildersleeve’s passion for developing relationships with students, staff, and the community shown through consistently during his interview process.
“We’re stronger together – our staff, students, community. In these times, with everything we’ve been through and COVID, I’m looking forward to building relationships here. I can’t wait to continue to meet people and form this family,” said Gildersleeve.
Students returned to Wayne Memorial on Monday, August 29th, however, Gildersleeve has been supporting Wayne Memorial extracurricular activities since day one. He paid visits to the marching band during practice, football team, cross country, and more.
“Being in a leadership position but still being able to be around the kids on a daily basis, it fills my bucket,” said Gildersleeve. “I’m looking forward to getting the school year going.”
Welcome Gildersleeve to the Wayne High family!
