By Sarah Shurge – During the Mackinac Policy Conference on June 3rd, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced an investment by Ford of more than $2 billion across the company’s plants in Michigan.
“Today’s announcement marks another historic economic win for the state in recent months and will help our economy grow even stronger,” said Governor Whitmer at the conference.
The project is expected to create more than 3,200 good-paying union jobs and to help boost the company’s electric vehicle (EV) production future in this state. According to Reuters, the 3,200 jobs are expected to include 2,000 at the Dearborn, Flat Rock, and Wayne assembly plants.
The Wayne Assembly plant is known for first introducing the 1966 Ford Bronco model in 1965. For 30 years the Bronco continued production in Wayne until 1996. Then after a 25 year absence, the Bronco returned in 2021.
Ford’s $2 billion investment will have an impact on the entire state with the increase of jobs resulting in spinoff investments and local redevelopment opportunities.
Reuters reported the investment will support increased production of Ford’s F-150 EV lighting, assembly of a new Ranger pickup truck, and a new Mustang. Ford also plans to build a new parts packaging facility in Monroe County.
State Representative Kevin Coleman (D-Westland) issued the following statement: “The auto and manufacturing industry built Michigan’s economy, and this investment in EVs and hardworking Michiganders will only help drive our economy forward. I’m excited to see how this announcement solidifies our place as leaders in manufacturing, while bringing more good-paying union jobs back to Southeast Michigan.”
According to michigan.gov: “Since 2016, Ford has announced nearly $10 billion in investment in Michigan, largely around electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturing, supporting nearly 10,000 new and retained jobs for Michigan’s manufacturing workforce.”
The investment announced will also secure the company’s existing internal combustion engine vehicle operations in Michigan.
“We are thrilled that Ford is advancing its long legacy in Michigan by investing $2 billion to create 3,200 good-paying UAW jobs,” said Governor Whitmer.
